Susquehanna Spoils Puerto Rico Opener

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The CUW women's basketball team opened play at the Puerto Rico Clásico on Monday evening. Susquehanna spoiled the Monday festivities with a 45-38 victory. The loss sends CUW to 5-4 on the season and snaps a four-game winning streak for the Falcons.

The scoring started on Monday with a layup from senior Emily Hafemann (Hales Corners, Wis.).

A three-point basket from senior Aubrey Buchholtz (Seymour, Wis.) elevated the CUW lead to 6-2 at the 7:14 mark of the first quarter for the biggest lead of the night for the Falcons.

The River Hawks used a 13-2 run to take back the lead. A three-point basket from junior Lily Guerra (Yorkville, Ill.) snapped the Susquehanna streak and ended the first quarter at 15-11.

The second quarter proved to be a back-and-forth battle. CUW closed the deficit to two points on two occasions and Susquehanna pushed back with a seven-point lead. Emily Hafemann scored a layup in the final minute to take the teams into halftime at 24-19.

The Maroon and Orange added onto the lead in the third quarter and had a lead at 38-26 with 2:28 left in the quarter.

The Falcons did not fold and continued to chip away at the lead in the fourth quarter. A three-point basket from senior Reagan Obry (Neenah, Wis.) cut the deficit to five points.

The River Hawks won the rebounding battle 40-27, with 16 offensive rebounds and 17 second-chance points.

Emily Hafemann led the contest with 17 points. She also led the flock with nine rebounds and two assists.

The Falcons look to bounce back on Tuesday against Gettysburg.
