MEQUON, Wis. – The CUW women's basketball team closed the home portion of the regular season in winning fashion on Wednesday night. The Falcons extinguished the Inferno with a 65-47 victory to improve to 14-10 on the year and to 13-4 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.
The Falcons and Inferno found themselves in a tight battle in the first quarter. The Inferno built a 13-10 lead with just over three minutes left in the quarter. A three-point basket from senior Aubrey Buchholtz (Seymour, Wis.) tied the game at 13, and a layup from junior Lily Guerra (Yorkville, Ill.) gave the Falcons a 15-13 lead after 10 minutes.
With the game tied at 23, the Falcons broke free of Alverno with a 9-2 run to close the second quarter. The birds closed the frame with a buzzer-beating three-point basket for Aubrey Buchholtz to head into the locker room leading, 32-25.
The Blue and White continued their domination in the third quarter. Senior Emily Hafemann (Hales Corners, Wis.) scored the first five points, including an old-fashioned three-point play. A layup from junior Erin Viergutz (Clintonville, Wis.) capped off a 7-0 run to start the quarter. Three-point baskets from Lily Guerra and Aubrey Buchholtz pushed the lead up to 47-29. A jump shot from senior Reagan Obry put the Falcons up 51-33 heading into the fourth quarter.
The biggest lead of the night came at 55-33 with a layup from Lily Guerra. A layup from sophomore Rachel Reed (Shawano, Wis.) closed the scoring with a layup at 65-47.
Senior Emily Hafemann led all scorers with 15 points, one point ahead of Aubrey Buchholtz at 14.
Erin Viergutz led the flock with eight rebounds and added 11 points.
The five victories are the longest winning streak since 2020.
All six teams have qualified for the NACC Tournament with tonight's results. The Falcons can clinch a home game in the quarterfinal round with a victory at Lakeland. The only locked seed is St. Norbert with the No. 1 seed.
