MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin ACHA hockey team fell short on Friday in the Mequondulac series to Marian. The Sabres send CUW to 10-4-0 and 4-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey League Black Division with a 4-2 result.
The Sabres struck first on Friday with two goals in the first period.
Sophomore Chuck Emme (Glenview, Ill.) put the Falcons on the scoreboard when he tapped in a rebound off a shot from senior Garrett Wilderman (Waukesha, Wis.) and a secondary assist to freshman Nolan O'Malley (Chicago, Ill.).
The Falcons scored a short-handed goal from Andrew Malek in front of the net off tic-tac-toe passes from senior Nolan Judge and freshman Rocco Cicirello (Mequon, Wis.)
Marian scored what proved to be the game-winning goal four minutes later.
The Falcons could fight off multiple penalties late, including a five-minute major, but Marian scored an empty-net goal in the final minute to secure the victory.
Marian held a 39-27 advantage in shots on Friday.
Junior Austin Bartell (New Berlin, Wis.) tallied 35 saves against the Sabres.
The Falcons look to split the weekend series on Saturday and force a shootout to retain the Mequondulac Cup.
