FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin field hockey team faced off against the Sabres of Marian in a non-conference matchup. Despite a season-high four goals, the Falcons fell just short, losing 5-4. With this result, Concordia's overall record now stands at 2-14.
The Sabres struck first, scoring two goals in the opening quarter. They extended their lead to 3-0 just 1:46 into the second quarter.
However, the Falcons showed resilience and fought back five minutes into the period. Sophomore Caitlyn Weitzel (Fallston, Md.) capitalized on her own rebound, finding the back of the cage to narrow the gap to 3-1.
Meanwhile, sophomore goalkeeper Parks Cawthray (Oakville, Ont.) made two key saves late in the quarter to keep the score at 3-1 heading into halftime.
After the break, the Blue and White continued their comeback. Weitzel netted her second goal after junior Katelyn Cardinale (Mount Laurel, N.J.) created the scoring opportunity, bringing the score to 3-2.
Two minutes and 45 seconds later, Weitzel completed her hat trick, assisted by freshman Naomi Little (Hartland, Wis.), leveling the score at 3-3.
The Sabres, however, regained their composure and retook the lead in the third quarter, making it 4-3. The Falcons responded once again, with junior Katie Quirke (Antioch, Ill.) scoring off a pass from senior Paige Armijo (Reseda, Calif.) to equalize at 4-4.
In the final quarter, the Sabres sneaked ahead with a goal with just 6:30 remaining in the contest, securing their victory.
Parks Cawthray delivered an impressive performance in goal, recording 11 saves throughout the match. As a team, the Falcons earned four penalty corners.
Looking ahead, the Falcons will compete in the first round of the Collegiate Field Hockey Conference (CFHC) next Thursday, entering as the sixth seed. The Falcons will await their opponent, the third seed, once the tournament bracket is finalized.
