Men's Hockey Chops Lumberjacks

ASHLAND, Wis. - The Concordia Wisconsin men's hockey team picked up a non-conference victory on Tuesday night. The Falcons downed the Lumberjacks, 5-2, improving to 1-2-0 on the young season.

Junior Derek Humphreys (Spokane, Wash.) scored the first goal of the evening in front of the net off passes from sophomore Matt Koepke (Vernon Hills, Ill.) and freshman Levi Carter (Keremeos, B.C.).

The Falcons struck again 64 seconds later off a turnover that was caused by Matt Koepke who tossed the puck to Derek Humphreys who found freshman Devon Savignac (Sudbury, Ontario) for his first collegiate goal.

The Lumberjacks scored at the 18:23 mark of the first period to cut the Concordia lead to 2-1 heading into the first intermission.

Freshman Jack Guvenal (Georgetown, Ontario) lit the lamp in the second period from the high slot for his first collegiate goal off passes from senior Zach Brydges (Woodbury, Minn.) and junior Noah Roitman (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.).

Freshman Connor Van Weelie (Mississauga, Ontario) was set up in front of the net and scored on the power play at the 10:10 mark of the second period for his first collegiate goal off passes from Derek Humphreys and Jack Guvenal.

The Lumberjacks chopped the Concordia lead with a power-play goal.

CUW responded with a goal from Matt Koepke with assists to senior Seth Bergeron (Minneapolis, Minn.) and freshman Evan Forrest (Spruce Grove, Alberta).

Freshman Cameron Hrdlicka (Calgary, Alberta) collected 21 saves in his first collegiate victory.

The Falcons held a 58-34 advantage in shots on Tuesday.

Matt Koepke led the flock with seven shots against the Lumberjacks.

The Falcons return to action on Saturday in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association opener at No. 15 Trine.
