Sabres Spoil a Sunny Saturday

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin field hockey team fell short on the sunny shores of Lake Michigan on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The Sabres of Marian secured a 3-1 Collegiate Field Hockey Conference victory to improve to 5-4 on the year and 1-1 in the CFHC. With the loss, Concordia Wisconsin falls to 1-7 and 0-2 inside the CFHC.

The Sabres struck early on Saturday with a goal 2:12 into the contest.

Senior Paige Armijo (Reseda, Calif.) tied the game with a shot from six yards out on a two-on-one advantage off a pass from sophomore Caitlyn Weitzel (Fallston, Md.).

The Falcons marched down the field after the goal and had shots on the cage from junior Katie Quirke (Antioch, Ill.) and Paige Armijo to end the first quarter.

Marian controlled the tempo to start the second quarter with shots that freshman Carlijn van der Bend (Voorburg, Netherlands) and a defensive save from freshman Anna Washburn (Suffield, Conn.) stopped. The Sabres responded with two goals from Jikke Biemans in the second quarter to take a 3-1 lead into halftime. The Blue and White had shots on goal from freshman Naomi Little (Hartland, Wis.) and freshman Rylee Binley (Suffolk, Va.) in the second quarter.

The Birds started to push the play in the third quarter on Saturday. The Falcons tried to take advantage of a green card on Marian and had an excellent shot from Naomi Little that was denied. CUW also forced three penalty corners in the final five minutes of the third frame.

CUW had some chances late on Saturday and had two penalty corners in the final two minutes, but they could only get a shot off from Katie Quirke that was saved.

The Sabres doubled the Falcons in shots on Saturday, 16-8. They also had a 7-6 advantage in penalty corners.

Carlijn van der Bend finished the contest with seven saves.

Katie Quirke led the flock with three shots on the cage.

Caitlyn Weitzel injected all seven penalty corners.

The Falcons will travel to Tennessee for a pair of non-conference showdowns against Rhodes and Sewanee.
