APPLETON, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin men's hockey team collected three big points in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association on Friday night at Lawrence. The Falcons picked up a 4-3 victory to improve to 11-9-0 on the year and to 6-7-0 in the NCHA.
The Vikings struck first on Friday with a goal in the second minute of the game off a two-on-one breakaway in transition.
Lawrence was able to hold that lead into the first intermission and held a 13-9 advantage in shots in the first period.
The Falcons tied the game 14:32 into the second period when freshman Devon Savignac (Sudbury, Ontario) found freshman Connor Van Wheelie (Mississauga, Ontario) open in front of the net for the first goal after junior Derek Humphreys (Spokane, Wash.) set up the play on the initial pass.
Two minutes later, the Falcons took the lead on the power play. Junior Noah Roitman (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) scored from the point off a pass from sophomore Alex Ochitwa (Prince George, British Columbia).
The Birds were able to extend the lead in the third period on a five-on-three power play with Levi Carter scoring in front of the net off tic-tac-toe passes from Noah Roitman and freshman Jack Guvenal ((Georgetown, Ontario).
The Vikings scored 60 seconds later with a shorthanded goal.
Derek Humphreys responded with a shorthanded goal of his own a minute later after he snuck the puck past the keeper after Noah Rpitman passed the puck to Humphreys down the ice.
The Vikings scored once again on the power play to cut the Falcons' lead in half.
Lawrence pressured the Concordia defense late with an extra skater but junior Gabe Rosek (East Lansing, Mich.) and the Concordia defense stood tall and kept the Vikings out of the net.
The Vikings eked out a 40-39 advantage in shots on Friday. Noah Roitman led the flock with five shots.
Gabe Rosek finished with 37 saves in the victory.
The Falcons go for the weekend sweep at home on Saturday night.
