MEQUON, Wis. - The Concordia University Wisconsin men's volleyball team faced its third nationally-ranked opponent on Friday at the R. John Buuck Fieldhouse, taking on the 11th-ranked Duhawks of Loras College. Despite battling hard throughout the match, the Falcons fell in straight sets, 14-25, 14-25, and 20-25, dropping to a 2-5 record on the season.
The opening set was a back-and-forth affair early on, with the Falcons staying close thanks to contributions from freshman Scott Reid (Chandler, Ariz.) and junior Tate Miller (Anthem, Ariz.), tying the score at 7-7.
However, the Duhawks went on a run to seize the momentum, eventually pulling ahead 17-9. Concordia made a late push, including a service ace from Miller, but Loras closed out the set 25-14.
In the second set, the Duhawks carried their momentum, taking five of the first six points.
The Falcons fought back, with junior Chase Ammons (Elm Grove, Wis.) and Reid Scott each tallying a kill, while Ammons, Miller, and freshman Hayden Hurley (Gilbert, Ariz.) teamed up for a block to cut the deficit to 10-12.
Despite the effort, Loras pulled away again, winning the set 25-14.
The Falcons saved their best play for the third set, staying competitive throughout. Miller led the offensive charge with four kills, and senior Kllen Gonzales (Milwaukee, Wis.), junior Will Wood (Savage, Minn.), and Ammons each added two kills.
However, the Duhawks gradually built a lead the Falcons couldn't overcome, taking the set 25-20 to secure the sweep.
Miller led Concordia with six kills, while junior Lucas Beres (Germantown, Wis.) added three kills with a .308 attacking percentage.
Hurley had a team-high 17 assists and contributed defensively with six digs and two block assists, along with Ammons, who also registered two block assists.
Junior Parker Pearson (Keller, Texas) paced the team with 19 service receptions.
The Falcons will look to bounce back quickly, hosting Augustana on February 1st at the R. John Buuck Fieldhouse.
