Falcons Sweep Thunder on the Road

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Concordia Wisconsin women's ice hockey team defeated Trine, 3-1, to take the series. The Falcons have won the last five games against the Thunder and 9-0-1 in the last four seasons.

The Thunder looked to find redemption after the Falcons victory yesterday scoring just 51 seconds into the game. But the Royal Blue and Grey pushed back scoring three unanswered to secure the win.

The first goal of the night belonged to freshman Julie Barlow (Bassano, Alberta) at the 12:31 mark in the first period. Assisted by sophomores Scout Stromberg (Tomahawk, Wis.) and Taylor Heleniak (Mercer, Wis.), Barlow secured her first collegiate goal of her short career.

Just over six minutes later senior Charlotte Toor (Hartland, Mich.) scored her first goal of the season. Heleniak earned her second assist of the night helping set up the shot for Toor.

The Falcons found the back of the net again, this time from sophomore Kayla Gomes (Harrow, Ontario). This was only the third goal for the Canadian forward. Freshmen Riley Veldman (Arvada, Colo.) and Maddy Jugan (Hartford, Wis.) earned assists for the first time in their careers.

Sophomore Gretchen Paaverud (Ramsey, Minn.) stood in the crease for the Falcons, collecting 14 saves. The sophomore goalie is now 1-1 on the season.

The Falcons finished with an impressive 36 shots compared to the Thunder's 15. Senior Makayla Spejcher (Green Bay, Wis.) led the team with seven of her own.

CUW also had the advantage in faceoffs going 24-18. Helniak lost only two to her 10 victories.
The Falcons look to continue their win streak on home ice against MSOE on Friday, Nov. 14. Puck drop is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Ozaukee Ice Center in Mequon, Wis.
