MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin women's basketball team improved to .500 on the season, moving to 11-11 overall and an impressive 10-3 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play with an 82-52 victory over the Alverno Inferno.
The win also boosted the Falcons' home record to 5-3 and gave them a 3-1 mark in February.
CUW dominated all aspects of the game, holding the lead for 39:09 of the contest, including a commanding 32-point advantage at one point. T
he Falcons outscored Alverno 52-18 in the paint, and bench depth was another key factor, as CUW's reserves outpaced Alverno's bench 53-3. Additionally, 14 different players contributed to the score sheet.
The Falcons got off to a strong start, racing to a 24-9 lead after the first quarter. Senior Aubrey DeBauch (Gillett, Wis.) had a stellar opening frame, recording seven points and three rebounds.
Junior Kaitlyn Carothers (Columbus, Ind.) was perfect from the field, scoring six points, while sophomore Gracie McNabb (Grafton, Wis.) also went flawless from the floor, adding five points.
CUW maintained their momentum in the second quarter, extending their lead to 39-17 by halftime.
Junior Andrea Butterbrodt (Green Bay, Wis.) led the Falcons in scoring for the quarter with four points, while DeBauch contributed three assists off her three steals. Carothers continued to shine, tying her career-high with eight points, adding a block.
Defensively, the Falcons were relentless, forcing six turnovers and limiting Alverno to just 23.1 percent shooting from the field in the second quarter.
The Falcons continued to build on their lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Inferno 21-17 to take a commanding 60-34 lead heading into the final period.
Sophomore Jayden Ross (Baraboo, Wis.) opened the second half with a coast-to-coast layup, followed by McNabb converting an offensive rebound off an assist from junior Ava Booth (Plymouth, Wis.).
Liliana Guerra (Yorkville, Ill.) caught fire in the third, hitting back-to-back three-pointers, and senior Lindsey Lonigro (Deerfield, Wis.) closed out the quarter with a layup and free throws.
CUW finished strong in the fourth quarter, outscoring Alverno 22-18. Sophomore Sierra Ertman (Sheboygan, Wis.) opened the scoring with a fast break layup assisted by Lonigro, marking Ertman's first collegiate points.
Ertman then drilled a three-pointer off a pass from freshman Alexa Schwartz (Treynor, Iowa).
Sophomore Bella Zeck (West Allis, Wis.) contributed four consecutive points, first with two made free throws and then with a beautiful layup off a feed from freshman Hannah Moesch (Muskego, Wis.).
Zeck also showcased her playmaking ability, pushing the ball in transition to assist senior Blayne Gacke (Crooks, S.D.) on a baseline midrange jumper for Gacke's first career points.
The final points came from Ertman's steal and fast break, culminating in a layup from sophomore Courtney Morse (Yorkville, Ill.), marking her first points of the season.
Moesch wrapped up the scoring with a three-pointer and a follow-up basket after grabbing an offensive rebound, securing the 82-52 victory.
In the win, the Falcons set a new season-high for points in the second half, totaling 43, surpassing their previous high of 40 scored at Marian on January 8th.
DeBauch posted her sixth double-double of the season, finishing with 11 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and three steals, all in under 15 minutes of action.
McNabb was perfect from the field, finishing with 10 points, while Guerra added 11 points off the bench, including three made three-pointers. Lonigro dished out a season-high five assists and contributed six points.
Carothers tied her career-high with eight points, and Moesch set a career-high with seven points and four rebounds. Defensively, DeBauch and Schwartz each recorded three steals, while Carothers and Moesch each added a block.
As a team, the Falcons set a new season-high with 51 rebounds, surpassing their previous best of 47, set at Lakeland on February 5th. The Blue and White also tied a season-high with 20 assists, matching their total from a win over Illinois Tech in January.
Next, the Falcons will face their final three conference opponents, with the next game taking place Saturday at Aurora.
