PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin men's volleyball team had the Highway 57 Cup on the line on Tuesday night. The Falcons were able to come out on top of the battle to retain the Highway 57 Cup with a 25-15, 16-25, 30-28, 26-24 victory. The Blue and White have now won two-straight matches and improved to 4-11 on the year and to 2-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
The Falcons took an early lead on Tuesday night a kill from freshman Reid Scott (Chandler, Ariz.) pushed the lead up to 8-3. The Muskies fought back and tied the set at eight. A kill from Reid Scott gave the Falcons the lead that they would not relinquish for the rest of the set. Leading 16-14, the Falcons closed the set on a 9-1 run after winning six-straight points. Junior Chase Ammons (Elm Grove, Wis.) had four kills in the final run, including the set-clinching point at 25-15.
Chase Ammons gave the Falcons a 4-3 lead to start the second set. Lakeland reclaimed the lead with a 6-0 run. The Falcons cut the deficit to three points at 8-11 and 10-13, but that is the closest CUW could get as the Muskies took the set at 25-16.
The Muskies jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the third set, but a kill from Reid Scott put the Falcons on the scoreboard. The Falcons continued to fight and tied the set at nine with a kill from junior Tate Miller (Anthem, Ariz.). The Falcons had their first lead of the set at 11-10 with an attack error. The set was tied at six different points, with the set tied at 18, Lakeland broke away with a 4-0 run. The Falcons clawed back and tied the set at 23 with an attack error from Lakeland. Senior Kellen Gonzales (Milwaukee, Wis.) gave the Falcons the set point at 24-23 with a kill, but Lakeland flipped the script with the next two points to have a set point for the home team. Kellen Gonzales tied the game at 25 and 26 with a pair of kills. A service ace for Reid Scott gave the Falcons a set point at 27-26, but the Muskies stayed alive. Chase Ammons gave the Falcons a 29-28 lead and a kill from senior Lucas Beres (Germantown, Wis.) gave the Falcons the set at 30-28.
It was Concordia that jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fourth set, with Reid Scott snagging two of the first four points. The Falcons pushed the lead up to 15-10 and 17-12 but the Muskies rallied to take a 24-23 lead. An attack error tied the set at 24 and kills from Tate Miller and senior Logan Kebisek (Brookfield, Wis.) gave the Falcons the victory at 26-24.
Reid Scott led the match with 18 kills in the victory.
Freshman Hayden Hurley (Gilbert, Ariz.) and Logan Kebisek both finished with 20 assists each.
Tate Miller finished with 12 kills and 12 kills for a double-double performance and Chase Ammons had nine kills with a 0.533 hitting percentage.
Junior Parker Pearson (Keller, Texas) surpassed 500 career digs and finished with 12.
Lucas Beres led the flock with four blocks at Lakeland.
Since the two schools have started playing for the Highway 57 Cup, the Falcons are 3-0 in the series.
The Falcons look to continue their winning ways on Friday at home against MSOE.
