Softball Splits with NACC Favorites

RIVER GROVE, Ill. – The Dominican Stars were able to earn 21 of the 26 first-place votes in the NACC Preseason Poll but could not take the series from the Concordia Wisconsin softball team on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons and the Stars split their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener with Dominican taking game one, 5-2, and Concordia leveling the series with a 7-2 game two victory. The Falcons are now 8-6 on the year and 1-1 in the NACC.

The Stars struck first on Saturday with two runs on two doubles in the first inning and another run in the second inning.

Senior Jess Pozezinski (Lake Villa, Ill.) cut into the lead in the third inning with a home run to right-center field that also scored sophomore Jenna Shadoski (Janesville, Wis.).

The Stars added two more runs in the sixth inning.

Sophomore Emma Shellstrom (San Diego, Calif.) held the Stars to six hits in game one.

Senior Megan Bloyer (Oregon, Wis.) and Jenna Shadoski both had two hits in the first game.

Game two belonged to the Birds on Saturday.

Jess Pozezinski started the scoring in the first inning with her second home run of the day, this time to centerfield.

Pozezinski struck again in the second inning with a double that scored junior Rylie Duval (Elgin, Ill.).

Junior Nora Statz (Helenville, Wis.) then scored Pozezinski on a double to left field.

A single to center field for Megan Bloyer second the second-inning spree as Nora Statz crossed home plate.

The Stars cut the Concordia lead in half with two runs in the bottom half of the second inning.

In the fourth inning, senior Jasmine Freeze (Bolingbrook, Ill.) smacked the ball to centerfield on a double that plated Nora Statz and Jenna Shadoski.

Junior Taylor Jacobson (Kenosha, Wis.) added to the lead in the seventh inning on a double to center field that landed Rylie Du Val across home plate.

Jasmine Freeze shined brighter than the Stars in the start in the circle and had three strikeouts. Sophomore Kylee Van de Loo (Menasha, Wis.) struck out two batters in the final two innings.

Jess Pozezinski, Nora Statz and Jasmine Freeze all had two hits in the victory.

The Jennas were sneaky on Saturday when sophomore Jenna Lischka (Manitowoc, Wis.) and Jenna Shadoski both stole a base at Dominican.

The Falcons look to continue their winning ways in Tuesday at Edgewood.
