Falcons Fall to Calvin in First-Ever Meeting

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin men's volleyball team fell to Calvin, 3-1, on Saturday in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Knights' program is in just its third season.
 
The two teams were evenly matched at the net throughout the contest, with Calvin recording 55 kills to CUW's 56. The Knights claimed the opening set before the Falcons responded in the second.
 
Concordia Wisconsin jumped out to an early lead in the second set, using a 5-1 run to take a 12-6 advantage. Seniors Chase Ammons (Elm Grove, Wis.), Will Wood (Savage, Minn.), and Tate Miller (Anthem, Ariz.) each recorded a kill during the run. The Falcons also forced two Calvin errors, one coming off a block by Miller and Parker Butterfass.
 
The teams traded points for the remainder of the set, but the Royal Blue and Grey maintained control throughout. CUW closed the set with back-to-back points from sophomore Parker Butterfass (Shakopee, Minn.), first on a kill assisted by sophomore Hayden Hurley (Gilbert, Ariz.), followed by a service ace to secure the set.
 
The Falcons continued to show resilience in the third set, rallying from a seven-point deficit late in the frame. CUW scored five straight points to pull within three at 17-20, then followed with a four-point run to tie the score at 22-22.
 
Concordia Wisconsin forced the set into extra points, but Calvin's offense prevailed in a 31-29 decision.
 
In the fourth set, CUW built a 22-17 lead, but the Knights mounted a comeback and again forced extra points before closing out the match.
 
Three Falcons recorded double-doubles in the contest. Sophomore Reid Scott (Chandler, Ariz.) led the team with 16 kills and added 10 digs. Sophomore Owen Kolozsy (Carol Stream, Ill.) contributed 12 kills, two service aces, and a team-high 21 digs. Miller also posted a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.
 
Hurley totaled 35 assists in the match, accounting for 35 of the Falcons' 57 total assists. Kolozsy added six assists.
 
Defensively, freshman Drew Nelson (Oak Creek, Wis.) served as the primary libero and recorded 10 digs. At the net, Ammons finished with six block assists, while Miller added five.
 
The Falcons begin a three-match road stretch on Tuesday, Jan. 27, traveling to North Central for a 7 p.m. match at Gregory Arena in Naperville, Ill.
