MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin field hockey team earned a 3-1 victory over Marian University on Saturday morning at Tomasini Stadium, opening CFHC play with a win.
The Falcons (3-5, 1-0 CFHC) wasted little time finding the back of the cage, scoring twice in the opening quarter to take a 2-0 lead.
Maddie Rock put CUW on the board at the 3:17 mark, finishing a chance off an assist from
Leah Mouganis.
Kaitlin Baylen then doubled the Falcon advantage at 12:28.
CUW continued to control the offensive pressure in the second quarter, recording four shots and earning two penalty corners. The Falcons carried their 2-0 advantage into halftime.
The third quarter saw both defenses hold strong as neither team found the back of the cage. Marian recorded two shots during the period, while CUW was held without a shot. Goalkeeper
Carlijn van der Bend and the Falcon defense kept the Sabres off the scoreboard, preserving the two-goal lead entering the final quarter.
Marian cut into the deficit at 52:30 to make it a 2-1 contest. The Falcons responded late, however, as Emily Robertson found the back of the cage with just 1:11 remaining. Robertson's goal was assisted by
Aly Schuster and Mouganis, restoring CUW's two-goal cushion and securing the 3-1 victory.
Rock, Baylen and Robertson each scored for the Falcons, while Mouganis recorded two assists. CUW finished the afternoon with nine shots, including five on goal, and earned four penalty corners. Van der Bend played all 60 minutes in goal and did not allow a goal during the final 45 minutes of play.
The Falcons return to action against St. Francis on Friday, October 16 at 3 p.m.
