Women’s Hockey Survives Against the Sabres

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin women's hockey team had a couple of records fall Friday night at Marian. The Falcons picked up their program record 21st victory of the season to improve to 21-2-1 on the year and 15-1-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.

It was the Sabres first on the scoreboard on Friday with a goal off a rebound early in the first period.

Halfway through the second period, junior Mackaylan McGown (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) lit the lamp off a steal from freshman Abby Hansberger (Elk River, Minn.).

Early in the third period, Abby Hansberger broke the school record for goals in a season with a snipe in front of the net off a pass from junior Naomi Black (Ottawa, Ontario) and a secondary assist to junior Brenna-Grace Dittmer (Chatham-Kent, Ontario). Hansberger also broke the record for points in a season.

Junior Chanler Taylor (Bloomington, Ill.)  scored the eventual game-winning goal off a Jordan McQuade (Brampton, Ontario).

The Sabres struck again three minutes later on the power play, but it was not enough.

The Falcons held a 33-14 advantage in shots on Friday night. Sophomore Gretchen Paaverud (Ramsey, Minn.) broke the school record with her 12th victory of the season.

Concordia once again dominated the faceoff circle on Friday, winning 42 of the 66 faceoffs. Mackaylan McGown won a game-high 17 and sophomore Taylor Heleniak (Mercer, Wis.) won 13 of her 16.

The Falcons look to bring out the brooms one more time in the regular season on Saturday against the Sabres.
