CLERMONT, Fla. – The Concordia Wisconsin softball team continued spring break play on Thursday against Hope and Bethany Lutheran. The Falcons fell 2-0 to the Flying Dutch in the opener but bounced back with a 7-4 victory over Bethany Lutheran. CUW moves to 7-4 on the season.
Hope struck first with an unearned run in the opening inning.
The Falcons threatened later in the game with junior Jenna Shadoski (Janesville, Wis.) and sophomore Anya Weiler (Hudson, Wis.) in scoring position but could not capitalize. The Dutch added another run in the sixth inning.
CUW had runners on the corners in the seventh inning but was unable to push a run across.
In the circle, freshman Faith Keiper (Tomball, Texas) recorded a strikeout in the start, while junior Kylie Strupp (Slinger, Wis.) also tallied a strikeout in relief.
In game two, Anya Weiler opened the scoring in the first inning with a single through the left side that plated Jenna Shadoski. The duo connected again in the third inning with Weiler singling home Shadoski once more.
The Falcons added to their lead in the fifth inning when junior Isa Bruno (Chicago, Ill.) doubled to left field to score Shadoski. Nora Statz followed by driving in Grace Olson and Anya Weiler.
Bethany Lutheran answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
CUW responded in the sixth inning as Weiler singled up the middle to score Shadoski. Bruno followed with a single to center field that brought home Weiler.
The Vikings attempted a late comeback but fell short.
Anya Weiler and Jenna Shadoski each collected three hits. Weiler finished with three RBI, while Shadoski scored four runs and added four stolen bases.
Junior Emma Shellstrom (San Diego, Calif.) earned her fourth win of the season with two strikeouts.
The Falcons close Florida play on Friday against Adrian.
