GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Concordia Wisconsin women's lacrosse team opened the 2026 season on Thursday in Texas. The Falcons fell in overtime, 12-11, to Wentworth, moving the Cougars to 2-1 on the season.
Wentworth struck first with a goal in the opening minute.
The Falcons tied the game three minutes later off the stick of senior Katelyn Cardinale (Mount Laurel, N.J.).
After another Wentworth goal, the Falcons closed the first quarter with four straight scores. Cardinale began the run before sophomore Gretchen Paaverud (Ramsey, Minn.) found the net. Cardinale struck again off a pass from senior Claire Geidel (Seward, Neb.), and sophomore Carlijn van der Bend (Voorburg, Netherlands) added a free-position goal.
Claire Geidel opened the second-quarter scoring with a goal off an assist from Gretchen Paaverud.
The Cougars responded with a goal with 5:57 remaining in the half. The Birds answered with goals from junior Carolyn Bourgeault (Buffalo, N.Y.) and junior Emily Robertson (Canton, Mich.).
Wentworth scored twice in the final two minutes of the half to trim the CUW lead to 8-5 at halftime.
Katelyn Cardinale scored the lone CUW goal of the third quarter on a free-position shot, giving the Falcons a 9-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Cardinale struck again for the first goal of the fourth quarter. Wentworth answered by closing regulation on a 4-1 run, with Emily Robertson recording the Falcons' lone goal during the stretch.
The Blue and Gold completed the comeback with the game-winning goal with 4:35 remaining in overtime.
The Falcons held a 30-26 advantage in shots.
Katelyn Cardinale and Claire Geidel each collected five ground balls, while Cardinale also led the flock with four draw controls.
Sophomore Anna Washburn (Suffield, Conn.) led CUW with three caused turnovers, and junior Parks Cawthray (Oakville, Ontario) made five saves in goal.
The Falcons close the Texas road trip on Friday at Southwestern. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved up due to expected weather.
