MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin field hockey team wrapped up its weekend on Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 loss to DePauw at Tomasini Stadium. The Falcons battled back to cut a two-goal deficit in half in the third quarter, but the Tigers answered to escape the shores of Lake Michigan with the victory.
DePauw struck first at the 6:18 mark of the opening quarter. Anna Marks found the back of the cage off an assist from Rosie Ondria to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage.
The Falcons nearly struck first, however, as senior Paige Armijo (Reseda, Calif.) put a shot on goal just 2:14 into the contest, but DePauw goalkeeper Colby Durbin was there for the save.
Junior goalkeeper Carlijn van der Bend (Voorburg, Netherlands) kept the Falcons within striking distance throughout the opening quarter. She turned away four DePauw shots in the first 15 minutes, including three saves after the Tigers took the lead.
Concordia Wisconsin continued to battle in the second quarter. Sophomore Kaitlin Baylen (Antioch, Ill.) tested Durbin at the 17:43 mark, but the DePauw goalkeeper came away with the save. The Falcons also earned their first penalty corner of the afternoon at 24:38.
The Tigers extended the advantage just 1:47 into the second half when Sophie Flynn scored off a pass from Ava Gallagher to make it 2-0.
The Falcons refused to fold.
Freshman Lily Pearl (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) connected with Armijo in front of the cage at the 34:39 mark, and Armijo buried the opportunity to cut the DePauw advantage to 2-1. The goal was Armijo's second of the weekend after also scoring in Saturday's victory over Wittenberg.
DePauw responded at 39:59 when Ellie Lochhead scored off a penalty corner to push the lead back to 3-1.
Freshman Emilia Rojas (Santiago, Chile) tried to answer for the Falcons late in the third quarter, firing a shot on goal at 43:13, but Durbin made the save.
The Falcons continued to fight in the fourth quarter and held DePauw scoreless over the final 15 minutes. Freshman Maddie Rock (Rockford, Mich.) produced one of CUW's final opportunities with a shot at the 53:07 mark.
Concordia Wisconsin finished the afternoon with five shots, including four on goal. Armijo led the Falcons with two shots, both on goal, while Baylen and Rojas also placed shots on cage. Armijo scored the lone CUW goal, with Pearl collecting the assist.
Van der Bend made six saves in 42:02 of action, while senior Parks Cawthray (Oakville, Ontario) closed out the final 17:58 without allowing a goal.
The Falcons move to 2-3 on the season.
