MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin men's hockey team battled Wisconsin on Friday night at home, but ultimately fell 3-1. The Falcons move to 0-3-0 on the season following the loss.
The opening period saw both teams remain scoreless, with Concordia Wisconsin goalkeeper Austin Bartell turning aside all 16 Wisconsin shots in the opening 20 minutes. The Falcons recorded five shots of their own during the first period.
Wisconsin broke through early in the second period, scoring twice within just over a minute. Zach Freimuth opened the scoring at the 7:33 mark, with an assist from Justin Schneider, before Reid Newkirk added another goal at 8:38 to give Wisconsin a 2-0 advantage.
The Falcons answered shortly after. At the 10:07 mark, Ryan Hogan found the back of the net for his first goal of the season, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Dayton Briski recorded the assist on the goal.
Concordia Wisconsin continued to battle throughout the remainder of the second period, but Wisconsin maintained its one-goal advantage heading into the third.
Wisconsin added an insurance goal at the 9:45 mark of the third period.
The Falcons were unable to find another goal in the final period as Wisconsin secured the 3-1 victory.
Despite the result, Bartell put together a strong performance in net, making 48 saves on 51 Wisconsin shots. Concordia Wisconsin finished with 16 shots on goal, while Wisconsin recorded 51.
Hogan led the Falcons offensively with one goal and two shots, while Briski added an assist. Caden Barnhill led the defensive effort with five blocked shots.
The Falcons will return to action Saturday, September 26 at 6:30 p.m. against Wisconsin.
