The Luther Cup stays in Mequon and the Falcons stay atop the NAC
standings after a chilly rain-soaked13-0 win over Wisconsin
Lutheran. That's all good news.
When is the last time you heard that a football team had only four
first downs and totaled 75 yards of offense in a victory? Chances
are it occurred in a game where weather was not suited for
football…or any other outdoor activity - like last
night.
The rain poured down game-long with temperatures in the 40's but
opportunistic Concordia made enough big plays defensively to
overcome the meager offensive output and move to 4-0 in the NAC
while dropping WLC to .500.
A 24 yard interception return by CUW's Justin Rogers midway thru
the first quarter provided what turned out to be all the points
that Concordia would need. It was one of three pickoffs by Falcon
defenders, who also recovered a pair of Warrior fumbles.
Two of those other turnovers resulted in "security" field goals
by amazing Dan Winsey who has drilled nine of ten attempts this
season.
Statistics do not tell the story of this encounter as the
frustrated hosts outgained Concordia almost 4-1 and converted 10
third down plays to just one for the Falcons. It was all about
defense for Greg Etter's squad as Warrior star Dominique James was
held to 4 catches for 29 yards after snaring 7 TD tosses in the
previous six games. Lutheran was only 9-31 through the air for 93
yards but the hosts churned out 169 yards on the ground. CUW, on
the other hand, never got anything going on offense as 29 rushes
netted 20 yards and 9 pass completions covered another 55.
Anthony Hoitink had a terrific performance for the Falcons
defensively with six solo tackles and a trio of sacks, plus a 37
yard average on six punts in the miserable conditions.
A win is a win;
nobody drowned; and the Falcons are still alone in first place
heading into a key 1:00pm Halloween matchup at CU- Chicago against
the pass-happy 5-1 Cougars who play Maranatha this Saturday.
