Lake Forest
Head coach Stacey Brunner knew that the early portion of the
2009-10 season would involve a "learning curve" due to the
departure of three outstanding starters. But the Falcon mentor did
not expect to be without her two year starting point guard, junior
Melanie Kulibert, who was home with the flu. "It would be polite to
say we were out of sync offensively," offered Brunner.
The Falcons only had one player reach double figures in scoring
(Asia Beckum 14 points), and shot just 37.7% from the field in a
79-65 loss to Loras College at the Forester Tip-Off Tournament.
In the first half, Concordia battled with Loras despite
shooting just 34.5% from the field. The opening 20 minutes featured
six ties, before Loras began to pull away- leading by as many as 11
and holding a seven point margin at halftime.
The young Falcons got back to within one point on a couple of
second half occasions before Loras pulled away.
Besides Beckum, CUW got nine point efforts from Pearl Wallace
and Kendall Kerns and eight points from freshman Tiffany
Hendrickson. Wallace and Hendrickson each grabbed a team-high seven
rebounds, but the Falcons were outrebounded 44-41 and turned the
ball over an unacceptable 24 times.
In all, Concordia shot 3-for-11 from beyond the arc and just
58.8% from the free throw line (10-for-17), while Loras shot 45.6%
from the field, 33.3% from downtown (7-for-21) and 64.5% from the
charity stripe at 20-for-31.
