Mequon
Lakeland College came to Mequon Saturday tied for first with the
Falcons and Concordia- Chicago. The Muskies left town with an
impressive 32-16 victory and the Cheese Bowl Trophy for a second
straight year. Concordia- Chicago's win over Aurora still leaves
the Muskies staring up at the Cougars in the race for an automatic
Bowl bid since CU- Chicago defeated Lakeland head- head.
A depleted Falcon offense, minus their top three running backs
(all out with injury) could not generate any consistent threat and
totalled just 200 yards for the game despite attempting 42 passes.
Quarteback TJ Pacchioli, doing his level best to compete with a
brace holding his torn ACL in place, was blitzed and battered
through four excruciating quarters and connected on only nine of
those throws while being sacked five times and knocked down on
eleven other occasions.
The game started and ended ominously with Lakeland recording
safeties for their first and last scores on the day. The Muskies
took a 2-0 lead when a CUW punt snap sailed over the end line with
three minutes remaining in the first quarter. Lakeland followed
that with a TD pass from Jake Dworak to Nic Horstmeier to take a
9-0 lead early in the second quarter.
Concordia got back into the game over the next dozen seconds as
Joseph Philemon returned the kickoff 92 yards for a score to cut
the deficit to 9-7.
Lakeland came back with a long march culminated by Dworak's 1
yard sneak to make it 16-7 before Concordia's Dan Winsey bombed
home a 48 yard field goal against the wind to make things
temporarily interesting just four minutes before halftime.
LC was picking up chunks of yardage against a CUW defense that
seemed to be constantly on the field, however, and the Muskies
roared back 70 yards in just four plays to make it 23-10 when
Roberto Flores snared a 22 yard TD toss from Dworak. Winsey added
his second field goal just before the halftime whistle to bring the
home forces within 10 at 23-13... but the handwriting was on the
wall.
Neither team scored in the third quarter, but the Muskies spent
most of the quarter gaining field position and eventually put the
game away when Adam Miller bolted 14 yards to a score with 6:22
left in the game to make it 30-13.
One bright spot for Concordia was the kicking of Winsey who
connected on all three of his field gal attempts, including the 48
yarder. His final three pointer made it 30-16 with less than five
minutes remaining, but Lakeland recorded the second of their
bookend safeties in the closing minutes.
CUW (4-5 on the season) will attempt to close out 2009 with a
.500 record when they travel to Rockford next Saturday for a noon
kickoff.
