This game was closer than the final score indicated as CUW got
the game's final 10 points to finally put the dagger into visiting
Alverno saturday afternoon in the Buuck Fieldhouse.
Concordia built a 33-23 halftime cushion and had leads of up to
15 early in the second half before the Inferno came storming back,
cutting the margin to 5 points on three different occasions.
Senior reserve Meghan Matthies was the hero down the stretch for
CUW as she hit 4 of 4 from the field in the final eight minutes.
Three of her baskets came with the Falcons on their heals as
Alverno continued to trim the deficit.
Three of Stacey Brunner's cagers: Tiffany Hendrickson (17),
Pearl Wallace (16) and Kendall Kerns (10) scored in double figures,
but it was Matthies and freshman Katie Toellner (7 points) who
made the offensive difference down the stretch.
The game lacked flow as the teams combined for 53 turnovers and
35 fouls, but the Falcons improved to 4-2 while dropping Alverno to
2-4 on the season. The Inferno got 14 points from Lisa Sorgi, who
climbed past the career 1000 point total, and 12 from Shataya
McComb. Alverno shot just 34% compared to 48% for Concordia.
