Greg Etter's Falcons stayed with Concordia- Chicago for two
quarters, trailing just 28-17 at the break, but the visitors turned
it on after halftime in the process of handing CUW a 49-20 defeat
Saturday afternnon at Century Stadium.
The Cougars (7-2) scored twice in the opening quarter to build a
14-0 cushion but the home forces got on the board when Scott
Schieble snared a 3 yard TD pass from Patrick Czerwiek to make it
14-7.
The explosive Cougars came right back for a quick 64 yard (6
play) scoring drive to make it 21-7 before CUW's Leon Davis
stretched out to grab a 21 yard TD pass from Czerwiek (21-14).
Just as hope began to rise in the Falcon camp, Concordia-
Chicago scored again with lightning-quick Jamal Thomas negotiating
a 39 yard jaunt to paydirt to make it 28-14.
CUW used the remainder of the half to go 61 yards before
stalling at the Cougar 3 and settling for a Dan Winsey field goal.
That made it just 28-17 at halftime but things got worse before
long.
CU-Chicago added three second half touchdowns and CUW's only
answer was a 38 yard Winsey field goal with 5:12 remaining in the
contest to make for a 49-20 final.
Statistics told the story as the Illinois boys rolled up 546
yards of offense including a massive 354 on the ground. Khyre
Copeland had 184 yards on just 18 carries and Jamal Thomas added 92
on a mere 4 attempts.
It was the first time in the history of the rivalry that
Concordia-Chicago has beaten CUW in consecutive years and only the
third time the Cougars have ever beaten CUW.
A fourth straight loss dropped CUW to 2-7 on the season. The
Falcon season concludes next Saturday at Lakeland.
