BELOIT, Wis. -- Beloit College, under new head coach
Jennifer Randall, broke from a 27-27 halftime tie to surprise
Concordia University Wisconsin 63-57 in the non-conference season
opener for both schools Tuesday evening.
The visiting Falcons appeared to be in command early, building a
27-17 advantage with four minutes remaining in the first half, but
the Buccaneers rallied to score the final 10 points of the opening
frame and never trailed during the final twenty minutes.
CUW (0-1) had 18 more field goal attempts than Beloit (1-0), but
the Falcons hit only 1-of-9 from beyond the arc and had trouble
stopping the hot-shooting hosts who fired away at a 47
percent clip.
Senior Brittney Toles (South Beloit, Wis.) came off the bench to
lead CUW with 14 points, while junior Tiffany Hendrickson
(Ingleside, Ill.) added 12 points.
Last year's leading scorer Katie Luethe (Sophomore, Oshkosh, Wis.)
was battling the flu and saw only limited action for head coach
Stacey Brunner-Jones' team.
"No excuses. We shot horribly from
inside and out, sent them to the free throw line 26 times, and got
outrebounded," said Brunner-Jones. "I was disappointed with every
aspect of our performance. It was just unacceptable."
Seniors Sarah Stariha scored 15 points for the Buccaneers,
while Lauren McNanna had 14 points and Kirstin Acosta finished with
12. The trio combined to hit 15-of-26 shots from the floor.
The Falcons (0-1) have a week to
prepare to host UW- River Falls on Tuesday, November 22 at 7pm in
the Buuck Fieldhouse.
