CEDARBURG, Wis. - For the second straight day, the
Concordia University Wisconsin was tied with No. 9 Adrian College
going into the third period; but the Falcons came up short once
again, losing 5-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Ozaukee Ice
Center.
CUW (1-9-2, 1-6-1 MCHA)
scored three goals in the second period to erase an early 3-0
deficit, but couldn't find the back of the net in the third despite
some good scoring chances.
The Bulldogs scored an
early goal in the third period to give themselves a 4-3 lead,
before tallying an empty net goal in the game's final seconds to
seal the win.
Adrian (8-3-0, 7-1-0
MCHA) lit the lamp three times in the first 15 minutes of the
regulation, with Josh Ranalli scoring twice and Jordan Watts adding
another goal to give the Bulldogs a three-goal cushion going into
the first intermission.
But the Falcons roared
back in the second period, scoring three goals of their own to tie
the score.
Sophomore Russell
Johnson (Monticello, Minn.) put CUW on the board with an unassisted
goal that beat Bulldog goaltender James Hamby.
With just over five
minutes remaining in the second period, freshman Morgan Sanchez
(Corona, Calif.) trimmed the Bulldogs' lead to 3-2 when he finished
off feeds from juniors Jake Furey (Cedarburg, Wis.) and Michael
Zirk (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada).
Only three minutes
later, freshman Lukas Allen (Lakeville, Minn.) got the Falcons back
on level terms, firing a shot from the point that beat Hamby with
the help of a screen from junior Graylyn Douglas (Plano,
Texas).
Just like in Friday's
loss to the Bulldogs, however, the third period proved to be the
difference.
Lukas Ciotti netted the
game-winner at 5:26 in the third, before Kyle Gallinger converted
an empty net chance as the final seconds ticked off the clock.
The Falcons will now
have a week of practice before hosting Gustavus Aldophus College at
the Ozaukee Ice Center's new rink on Friday night at 8 p.m.
