MEQUON, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin stayed unbeaten in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play with a pair of victories on Saturday over MSOE, 7-2, and Marian University, 9-0.
The two wins sets up a showdown with NACC powerhouse Edgewood College on Sunday at 11 a.m. for possibly at least a share of the regular season title. EC also plays Alverno College at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
So, a CUW victory would clinch at minimum a share of the NACC regular season title, if not the outright crown, while a Falcons loss and an Eagles loss to the Inferno would still give them a share of the title. A CUW loss to Edgewood and an Edgewood victory over Alverno, would give CUW sole possession of second place in the NACC standings.
The Eagles have won 40-consecutive NACC regular season matches, which dates back three years. In addition, the last time EC last was to CUW by a 7-2 decision on Sept. 10, 2011. CUW (9-1, 9-0 NACC) last earned at least a share of the NACC regular season title in 2011 when it tied with Wisconsin Lutheran College.
On Saturday, the Falcons won five of six doubles matches and all12 singles matches it played. They won six singles matches giving up a point and two by blanking the opposition. CUW also won three doubles matches by 8-0 scores.
During the opening 7-2 victories over the Raiders, the No. 3 doubles pairing of senior Emily McCormick (Waukesha, Wis.) and sophomore Michaela Wagner (Oswego, Ill.) won 8-2 to help CUW earn a 3-0 advantage after doubles play.
Freshman Hannah Tresedder (Kingsford, Mich.) edged out a 4-6, 6-0, 10-7 win at No. 1 singles, while the Falcons won singles matches in No. 3-6. Sophomore Alisia Macioch (South St. Paul, Minn.) blanked her No. 6 singles opponent 6-0, 6-0 to highlight singles play.
CUW earned its third 9-0 win of the season when it downed Marian to end the day. They blanked the Sabres 8-0 in each of the three doubles matches and sophomore Jessica Sapp (Memphis, Mich.) posted the only 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles.
