TUCSON, Ariz. – A five-run fifth innings, along with strong relief performances by seniors Michael Winter and Tyler Adams, helped the Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball to an 8-6 win over Valley City State Thursday night at the Kino Sports Complex.
The Falcons used a reverse pitching approach on Thursday, starting a reliever and finishing with the normal starter in Adams (Jackson, Wis.). Winter (Cedarburg, Wis.) and Adams combined for eight innings in relief and allowed three earned. Winter picked up the win, throwing three innings and allowing one run. He also allowed just one hit in his three innings. Adams earned the save after throwing five innings, giving up two earned.
CUW (2-5) trailed entering the bottom of the fourth by a 4-1 scored but put up five runs to take a 6-4 lead. Junior Kyle Hegeman (New Berlin, Wis.) had a two-RBI double in the inning, while Matt Schubert, Justin Barney and Joel Sharon (Milwaukee, Wis.) all collected RBI singles in the inning.
The Falcons would continue to build their lead, scoring once in the fifth and once more in the seventh to take an 8-4. CUW would get a scare in the ninth inning as the Vikings scored two runs and had the tying run on base, but Adams got the final batter to flyout to Schubert (West Bend, Wis.) for the two-run win.
After a shaky first inning that saw two errors, the Falcons defense improved the rest of the way not committing an error over the final eight innings. The infield defense of Hegeman, Noah Greenberg (Libertyville, Ill.), Schubert and Brandon Seifert (Germantown, Wis.) played a very strong game over the final eight innings.
Schubert (West Bend, Wis.) and Barney (Kenosha, Wis.) each had two hits to pace the Falcons offensive attack. Schubert doubled and scored a pair of runs, while Hegeman drove in a team-best three for CUW. Freshman Nathan Thyssen (Appleton, Wis.) and Greenberg each added an RBI.
Valley City State (14-12), an NAIA school, was paced by Jake Rambow who collected three hits and drove in three runs. Joe Demers added three hits for the Vikings. The Falcons got to the VCSU starter, Chris Holden, in the fourth inning as he was the pitcher of record, throwing three innings and allowing six runs, five earned.
CUW will be back in action tomorrow in a doubleheader against Saint John's (Minn.). The Falcons and Johnnies are set for a 10 am (MST) first pitch and live stats will be available at CUWFalcons.com.
