Baseball splits doubleheader with Marian

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Falcons won their third conference game of the season 5-1 in the opener of a doubleheader with Marian, though they fell in the closing game 6-1 on Saturday. 

THE BASICS
-Final Score: CUW 5, Marian 1 | Marian 6, CUW 1
-Records: CUW 7-11 (3-3 NACC), Marian 10-7 (2-4 NACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
-In the opener, the Falcons struck first with a run in the top of the first.
-CUW added two more in both the eighth and ninth innings.
-Sam Beers (Janesville, Wis.) and Charlie Rodriguez (Tinley Park, Ill.) each had RBI singles in the eighth.
-In the ninth, Austen Dart (Algoma, Wis.) drove in one with a single and Drew Barth (Pewaukee, Wis.) drove in another with a double.
-Johannes Haakenson (Janesville, Wis.) led the Falcons with two runs scored.
-Matthew Olig (Plymouth, Wis.) earned the win with no runs allowed and seven strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
-Lukas Meerdink (Oostburg, Wis.) got the two-inning save while striking out four.
-In the following game, the fortunes switched as the Sabres held the Falcons to one run while scoring six.
-The Sabres capitalized with a five-run second inning to power them to the win.
-Beers prevented a shutout with a solo home run in the third inning, his first of the season.
