MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The CUW ACHA hockey team took the short bus ride south to Marquette to take on the Golden Eagles in the first of a home and home series this weekend.
The Falcons struck first in the first period with a goal from junior Matt Gregor (Ashland, Wis.) with assists from junior Trenton Sherman (Farmington, Minn.) and freshman Garrett Wilderman (Waukesha, Wis.). This goal came in the tenth minute of the first period.
The Falcons and the Golden Eagles went into the first intermission with a 1-0 Falcon lead.
The Falcons took a two-goal lead in the second minute of the second period off the stick of sophomore Nick Roberts (Milwaukee, Wis.). Roberts was assisted by freshman Tommy Cassel (Grafton, Wis.) and sophomore John Swiatek (Rochester, N.Y.).
The Golden Eagles scored two and a half minutes later, but the Falcons brought the lead back to two with a power-play goal in the fifth minute off the stick of senior Wyatt Wilderman (Bear Dance, Mont.) with helpers from his brother Garrett Wilderman as well as junior Scott Gregor (Ashland, Wis.).
The Falcons netted another goal in the second period just a minute later. John Swiatek sank one into the back of the net off the stick of Scott Gregor as well as his brother Matt Gregor. This gave the Falcons a three-goal lead.
The Golden Eagles came storming back with another goal in the second period as well as two more unanswered in the third to take the 5-4 lead.
The Falcons tied the game back up in the 12th minute with an unassisted goal from junior Connor Doyle (Naples, Fla.).
The Golden Eagles spoiled the Falcons' hopes with a goal inside one-minute remaining in the game.
Marquette took the first matchup of the series with a 6-5 final score.
The Falcons look to avenge this matchup Saturday afternoon inside the Ozaukee Ice Center.
