Women's Hockey Sweeps Lawrence

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin women's hockey team protected home ice on pink the rink night with a 6-1 victory over Lawrence on Saturday night. The victory sends CUW to 12-9-1 and to 7-7-0 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.

Sophomore Brooke Gibson (LaSalle, Ont.) started the scoring on the power play with a top-shelf goal from the near circle and assists to freshman McKayla Spejcher (Green Bay, Wis.) and sophomore Amanda Bauer (Waunakee, Wis.).

The Falcons broke the game open in the second period.

Makayla Spejcher tapped in a rebound off a shot from sophomore Natalie Mackrell (Stuttgart, Germany) and a secondary assist to freshman Jillian Tabaka (Maplewood, Minn.).

The power play struck again five minutes later. Natalie Mackrell knocked the puck off an original shot from Brooke Gibson. Amanda Bauer earned another secondary assist.

The birds struck again late in the second period again on the power play when Brooke Gibson put away the puck again off passes from Natalie Mackrell and Makayla Spejcher.

A three-on-one breakaway started the scoring in the third period. Makayla Spejcher put the puck into the back of the net off tic-tac-toe passes from Natalie Mackrell and Jillian Tabaka.

The Vikings took advantage of a turnover and scored their lone goal of the series.

Senior Bela Noyle (Baltimore, Md.) picked up the rebound of a Brooke Gibson shot and lit the lamp with 40 seconds left after senior Colleen Gilligan (Colbourne, Ont.) set up the play.

Sophomore Kami McCardle (Jackson, Wis.) collected 21 saves in the victory.

The Falcons once again dominated the faceoff circle and won 38 faceoffs, with Brooke Gibson winning 17.

CUW held a 58-22 advantage in shots on Saturday. Brooke Gibson led the flock with 10 shots.

The Falcons return to action on Tuesday for the final non-conference game of the year at Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
