Cobbers Claim Concordia Cup

MEQUON, Wis. – In the second game of their weekend series against the Concordia Moorhead Cobbers, the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons fell short, losing 1-2 and moving to 0-2-0 on the early regular season. With this victory, the Cobbers claimed the inaugural Concordia Cup.

The first period ended without a score, as the Cobbers outshot the Falcons 8-6. Both teams struggled to capitalize on their power play opportunities during this time.

The Falcons broke the deadlock in the second period with 9:09 remaining. Sophomore Matt Koepke (Vernon Hills, Ill.) initiated the play, finding freshman Connor Van Weelie (Mississauga, Ont.) down the ice. Van Weelie sped down the left side and delivered a perfectly placed pass to sophomore Riley Klugerman (Aurora, Ont.), who finished with a one-timer past the CCM goalie, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The score held as the teams entered the final intermission.

However, the Cobbers regrouped and responded in the third period. They scored their first goal on the power play with 6:49 left in the game and followed up with the eventual game-winner just 1:49 before the final buzzer.

In the loss, Connor Van Weelie led the Falcons with four shots on goal, while fellow freshman Levi Carter (Keremeos, B.C.) excelled in the faceoff circle, winning a team-high eight draws. Goalie Gabe Rosek recorded 33 saves.

Looking ahead, the Falcons will return to the ice on Tuesday, November 5th, when they face off against the Lumberjacks of Northland College.
