Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Hot Start Propels Falcons to Victory Over Lake Forest

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The CUW women's ice hockey team remained undefeated in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play, improving to 5-0 in conference action and 6-2-0 overall after dominating Lake Forest College, 6-0.

The six-goal victory marked the first time since February 11, 2023, when the Falcons defeated Lawrence, 6-1, that CUW scored six or more goals in a game.

CUW wasted no time getting on the board, taking a commanding 5-0 lead after a stellar first period.

Just 3:16 into the game, senior Olivia Kurtz (Plainfield, Ill.) scored her second goal of the season to give the Falcons a 1-0 advantage, with senior Savannah Hutchins (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) earning her first point of the year on the assist.

Less than 90 seconds later, sophomore Mackaylan McGown (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) found the back of the net on the power play, thanks to a pinpoint pass from senior Brooke Gibson (LaSalle, Ont.), putting the Falcons up 2-0.

The Falcons continued to roll, adding a third goal just 75 seconds after their second. Senior Lilly Casher (Grayslake, Ill.) scored her first goal of the season, with senior Erika Graham (Brighton, Mich.) assisting to extend CUW's lead to 3-0.

At the 11:41 mark of the first period, the Falcons struck again on the power play, as Brooke Gibson netted her first goal of the season with an assist from McGown, making it 4-0.

McGown wasn't done yet—she completed a three-point period by scoring her second goal of the game with 5:19 left in the opening frame. Sophomores Naomi Black (Ottawa, Ont.) and Ava Litkey (Kenosha, Wis.) registered the assists as CUW took a commanding 5-0 lead into the first intermission. The Falcon defense held the Foresters to just six shots on goal in the period.

In the second, freshman Scout Stromberg (Tomahawk, Wis.) added her first collegiate goal at the 12:38 mark, with assists from sophomore Brenna-Grace Dittmer (Chatham-Kent, Ont.) and senior Amanda Bauer (Waunakee, Wis.).

Despite several more scoring chances for both teams, the 6-0 scoreline held, with the Falcons sealing the victory.

In net, senior Kami McCardle (Jackson, Wis.) earned her first shutout of the season, making 25 saves to improve her record to 4-1-0.

McGown and junior Makayla Spejcher (Green Bay, Wis.) each registered five shots on goal to lead the offense, while McGown also won 14 faceoffs.

The Falcons now turn their attention to tomorrow's rematch against the Foresters, where they will have the opportunity to claim the Border Battle Cup with another win.
