MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin women's hockey team closed its opening weekend against the Cardinals of Saint Mary's on Saturday afternoon. Saint Mary's receiving votes in the USCHO rankings, earned the split with a 1-0 victory.
Neither team found the net once again in the first period, for the second time this weekend.
The Cardinals held a 7-4 advantage in shots in the first period and boosted it to a 15-4 margin in the second period but sophomore Gretchen Paaverud (Ramsey, Minn. was up to the challenge.
The visitors scored the lone goal of the game 3:27 into the third period.
The Falcons threatened late but could not find the back of the net.
Gretchen Paaverud had 27 saves on Saturday afternoon.
Saint Mary's had a 28-13 advantage in shots on Saturday.
Junior Mackaylan McGown (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) won a game-best 11 faceoffs.
The Falcons now turn their attention to Trine as the open Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play on Friday.
