LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Concordia Wisconsin women's hockey team picked up another three key points in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association on Saturday night. The Falcons brought out the brooms with a 4-2 victory to improve to 7-1-0 on the year and to stay in first place at 6-0-0.
Senior Makayla Spejcher (Green Bay, Wis.) started the scoring on a cross ice pass from junior Ava Litkey (Kenosha, Wis.) that was tipped by freshman Abby Hansberger (Elk River, Minn.).
Junior Mackaylan McGown (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) started the second-period scoring after she went streaking down the right side from a pass from junior Brenna-Grace Dittmer (Chatham-Kent, Ontario) and freshman Michaela Gerum (Wausau, Wis.) secondary assist.
The Falcons added to the lead with an offensive zone steal and a goal from Abby Hansberger.
The Foresters found the back of the net for the first time in the weekend hallway through the third period to cut into the Concordia lead.
Makayla Spejcher continued to feat upon the foresters in the third period with a goal off a steal in front of the cage where Abby Hansberger was credited with an assist.
Lake Forest scored late with a shorthanded goal, but it was not enough.
The Birds blasted the LFC net with a 41-21 advantage in shots on Saturday.
Concordia once again dominated the faceoff circle, winning 39 of the 61 faceoff. Mackaylan McGown won 17, Lake Forest won 22 as a team.
Junior Carolyn Bourgeault had 19 saves in the victory.
The Border Battle Cup will remain is safe custody for another year, after a rough trip to Illinois two years ago. CUW has now won the cup three of the last four years. This is the second time that the Falcons have swept Lake Forest for the Cup.
The Falcons will rest up, give thanks, and return to action in December at Dubuque.
