STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin women's hockey team extended its winning streak to nine games with a 5-0 shutout victory over UW–Stevens Point on Friday night. The win marks the Falcons' second shutout of the season and improves CUW to 10-1 overall.
Senior goaltender
Gretchen Paaverud recorded her first shutout of the season and the third of her career, stopping all 15 shots she faced to improve to 4-1 on the year.
Freshman
Abby Hansberger (Elk River, Minn.) opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 7:21 mark of the first period after stripping the puck from a Pointers defender and converting on the breakaway.
Just over 10 minutes later, freshman
Jordan McQuade (Brampton, Ont.) doubled the lead with her first collegiate goal, assisted by senior
Makayla Spejcher (Green Bay, Wis.) and sophomore
Scout Stromberg (Tomahawk, Wis.).
Hansberger added her second goal of the night early in the second period to give the Falcons a 3-0 advantage. Spejcher forced a turnover, connecting with junior
Brenna-Grace Dittmer (Chatham-Kent, Ont.), who found Hansberger in front of the net for the finish.
CUW opened the third period with another unassisted goal, this time from
Naomi Black, who won a battle along the boards in the offensive zone before taking the puck to the net.
Hansberger capped the scoring with her third goal of the night to record her first collegiate hat trick. With under three minutes remaining, Spejcher won a puck battle in the defensive zone and carried it up ice before finding Hansberger for the final tally.
The Falcons outshot the Pointers 44-15, with Hansberger, Spejcher and Black each recording five shots on goal. Sophomore
Taylor Heleniak (Mercer, Wis.) led CUW at the faceoff circle, going 13-7.
Concordia Wisconsin's defense limited UW–Stevens Point to just one shot on goal in the second period and 15 overall.
The two teams will conclude the series on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Stevens Point, Wis.
