Falcons Sweep Stevens Point; Spejcher Breaks Record

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Sunday marked a historic day for the Concordia Wisconsin women's hockey program. After earning their first-ever win in Stevens Point on Saturday night, 5-0, the Falcons completed their first sweep of Wisconsin–Stevens Point with a 4-0 victory on Sunday. The win capped the most successful semester in program history, as the Falcons improved to 11-1-0.

Concordia controlled play early, outshooting the Pointers 14-4 in the first period, but the game remained scoreless through the opening 20 minutes.

The Falcons broke through early in the second period on the power play. A shot from freshman Abby Hansberger (Elk River, Minn.) caromed off junior Naomi Black (Ottawa, Ontario) before being redirected into the net by junior Mackaylan McGown (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.).

Wisconsin–Stevens Point threatened later in the period with a breakaway opportunity, but sophomore goaltender Gretchen Paaverud (Ramsey, Minn.) came up with a key save to preserve the lead.

Concordia struck again just 22 seconds into the third period when freshman Faith Fedyniak (St. Albert, Alberta) scored her first collegiate goal on a centering pass from senior Makayla Spejcher (Green Bay, Wis.). Seven minutes later, junior Chanler Taylor (Bloomington, Ill.) extended the lead, finishing in front of the net off a feed from Naomi Black.

At the 13:04 mark of the third period, Spejcher added her name to the record books. She redirected a shot from sophomore Scout Stromberg (Tomahawk, Wis.) for her 51st career goal, breaking the program record previously held by Brooke Gibson. Gibson finished her career with 107 points (50 goals, 57 assists), while Spejcher now has 99 points with 51 goals and 48 assists.

"I'm truly and incredibly thankful to be a part of this team, and I couldn't have reached this goal without any of them and the people that came before me," said Spejcher. "This is an incredible program and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. Thank you to Coach Fabiilli for giving me this opportunity and helping me grow. Lastly and most importantly, I give all glory to God for blessing me throughout my hockey career."

Paaverud was outstanding in net, stopping all 19 shots she faced to earn her second shutout of the weekend and the fourth of her career. She finished the weekend with 34 total saves.

The Falcons held a decisive 41-19 advantage in shots on Sunday, with Stromberg leading all skaters with eight shots. Concordia also blocked 14 shots, led by McGown with four and junior Brenna-Grace Dittmer (Chatham-Kent, Ontario) with three.

The Blue and White controlled possession throughout the contest, winning the faceoff battle behind sophomore Taylor Heleniak (Mercer, Wis.), who went 10-for-15, and McGown, who won a team-high 16 draws.

Sunday marked the first time the Falcons recorded back-to-back shutouts since February, when Concordia swept Lawrence (5-0, 1-0) and followed it up with a 1-0 win over No. 5 Adrian.

Wisconsin–Stevens Point fell to 8-5-0 on the season and was shut out in back-to-back games for the first time since the 2024 season opener against St. Olaf.

Concordia's 11 wins tie the program record for victories in a semester, set during the 2024 fall season. The 11-1-0 mark is the best start in program history, good for a .917 winning percentage, surpassing last season's 11-2-0 (.846) start.

The Falcons return to action in 2026, hosting Beloit College at the Ozaukee Ice Center on Jan. 9.
