MEQUON, Wis. – In a back-and-forth battle defined by momentum swings, the Concordia Wisconsin women's basketball team came up just short against Edgewood on Monday night. The Eagles used a late surge to escape with a 56-50 victory, dropping the Falcons to 2-6 overall and 3-2 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.
The Falcons struck first on Monday night as junior Jayden Ross (Baraboo, Wis.) opened the scoring with a jump shot. Concordia quickly built a 10-2 advantage following a fast-break layup from sophomore Kristin Wentling (Arlington Heights, Ill.). Junior Gracie McNabb (Grafton, Wis.) scored the final points of the quarter for the Falcons, giving CUW a 15-11 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
Edgewood responded with a 13-0 run over the first five minutes of the second quarter to take a 24-15 lead. Freshman Maddie Becker (Zimmerman, Minn.) scored her first collegiate points with an old-fashioned three-point play late in the half, trimming the deficit to 26-24 at the break.
Concordia reclaimed the lead midway through the third quarter when Wentling knocked down a three-pointer to put CUW ahead 34-31. The Falcons closed the period on a 6-0 run, highlighted by four more points from Wentling, to take a 44-36 advantage into the final quarter.
Junior Andrea Butterbrodt (Green Bay, Wis.) opened the fourth quarter with a layup to give the Falcons their largest lead of the night at 46-36. Edgewood answered with a decisive 20-4 run over the final minutes to secure the win.
Wentling led the Falcons with 14 points, while Butterbrodt pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Freshman Amya Pluess (Burlington, Wis.) added a season-best six steals. Concordia also held a 28-18 edge in points in the paint.
The Falcons will face a tough non-conference test on Thursday when they travel to Wisconsin–Stevens Point.
