MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin women's basketball team opened Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play in dominant fashion on Wednesday night, rolling past Marian 90–65 for its highest scoring output of the season.
The Falcons showcased their best offensive quarter of the year right away, putting up 24 first-quarter points to take a 24–22 lead after 10 minutes. CUW used an early 8-0 run to go up 13–5 before the Sabres responded, and a late layup from freshman
Amya Pluess (Burlington, Wis.) pushed the Falcons back in front heading into the break.
Marian answered in the second quarter, building a seven-point lead and carrying a 43–40 advantage into halftime.
The third quarter, however, belonged entirely to the Falcons. CUW erupted for a 26–4 run to open the frame, forcing 12 turnovers and grabbing nine steals—five coming from Pluess. All eight Falcons who played in the quarter scored, led by junior
Andrea Butterbrodt (Green Bay, Wis.) with eight points. Concordia totaled a season-best 28 points in the period and surged ahead 68–55.
CUW kept the momentum rolling in the fourth, outscoring the Sabres 22–10. Freshman
Isabela Gunderson (Waukesha, Wis.) capped the night with the final basket, giving the Falcons their largest lead at 90–65.
Concordia's defensive pressure proved decisive, as the Falcons forced 30 turnovers and converted them into a season-high 41 points. CUW also dominated the paint with 56 points and earned a 33–29 edge on the glass. Sophomore Kirstin Wentling (Arlington Heights, Ill.) pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
Five Falcons reached double figures: Pluess (19), Gunderson (18), Butterbrodt (17), Wentling (13), and junior
Jayden Ross (Baraboo, Wis.) with 12. Ross and Pluess shared the game high with three assists each. CUW also protected the ball well, committing a season-low 14 turnovers.
The 90 points mark CUW's highest total since a 102–39 win at Rockford on Feb. 1, 2020.
The Falcons now turn their attention to a Saturday-night showdown with MSOE.
