DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Concordia Wisconsin women's hockey team broke out the brooms on Saturday afternoon, completing the weekend sweep at Dubuque. With a 6-5 victory, the Falcons remain atop the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) standings, improving to 9-1-0 overall and 8-0-0 in league play for 24 conference points.
Senior Makayla Spejcher (Green Bay, Wis.) opened the scoring with a shot from the slot, assisted by freshman Emma Geffre (St. Louis, Mo.) and freshman Faith Fedyniak (St. Albert, Alberta). The goal pulls Spejcher into a tie for the program record for career goals with 50.
Junior Naomi Black (Ottawa, Ontario) put the Falcons back on top with a power-play strike off a rebound from junior Mackaylan McGown (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.), with Spejcher adding the secondary assist.
Dubuque responded with two late-period goals to take a 3-2 lead after the opening frame, then doubled the advantage with a power-play marker just two minutes into the second.
CUW answered quickly. Two minutes later, Naomi Black buried her second of the afternoon on the power play, finishing a rebound from freshman Abby Hansberger (Elk River, Minn.).
Midway through the period, Naomi Black completed the hat trick with a sharp shot from the slot off a feed from Hansberger to allow the imaginary hats to fly onto the ice. The three goals are a career best for Black.
Senior Charlotte Toor (Hartland, Mich.) added to the momentum late in the second, showcasing her speed by stealing the puck at the far blue line and racing in alone for a breakaway finish.
Dubuque refused to go quietly, tying the game once more in the third period.
Freshman Michaela Gerum (Wausau, Wis.) delivered the dagger, converting on a breakaway to score the game-winning goal.
Junior Carolyn Bourgeault (Buffalo, N.Y.) remained undefeated in her collegiate career, earning the win in net.
The Falcons dominated the faceoff circle, winning 44 of 73 draws. McGown led all players with 20 faceoff wins. CUW also blocked nine shots, with sophomore Scout Stromberg (Tomahawk, Wis.), McGown, and junior Ava Litkey (Kenosha, Wis.) each registering two blocks.
The 9-1-0 start marks the best opening to a season in program history.
The Falcons will turn their attention to crush their final exams this week before closing out the semester next weekend at Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
