MENOMONIE, Wis. – A last-minute goal spoiled Saturday for the Concordia Wisconsin women's lacrosse team. The Blue Devils of Wisconsin-Stout snagged a 9-8 lead to send the Falcons to 1-5 on the year.
The Blue Devils struck first on Saturday with a goal four minutes into the contest.
Sophomore Carolyn Bourgeault (Buffalo, N.Y.) tied the game six minutes later.
Senior Kami McCardle (Jackson, Wis.) gave the Falcons the lead off a pass from Carolyn Bourgeault and the Falcons took a 2-1 lead into the second quarter.
After Stout scored on a woman-up goal in the first minute of the second quarter, the Falcons responded with a 3-0 run with goals from junior Katelyn Cardinale (Mount Laurel, N.J.), senior Ava Karlov (Naperville, Ill.) and Carolyn Bourgeault over a 3:30 stretch.
Katelyn Cardinale elevated the lead to 6-3 with 90 seconds left in the first half with a woman-up goal.
The Blue Devils closed the first half with two goals in the final 80 seconds, including one woman-up goal, thinning the Falcon advantage to 6-5 at halftime.
Katelyn Cardinale was able to fight through three defenders for the lone goal of the third quarter for the Falcons.
Stout scored twice in the final two minutes of the quarter to tie the game at seven.
The Blue Devils secured their second lead of the game on a free-position shot with 10:15 left.
Down a player, the Falcons scored 23 seconds later after they soared down the field and Kami McCardle scored off an assist to freshman Sophia Whiteaker (Normal, Ill.).
The Falcons had some great looks late and took advantage of a handful of Stout cards.
Concordia had a free position shot that was saved with 34 seconds left, Stout picked up the ball and stormed down the field, and scored the game-winning goal shorthanded with 14 seconds left.
The Blue Devils won the draw control and ran out the clock to secure the victory.
The Falcons held a 33-29 advantage in shots on Saturday. Katelyn Cardinale led the contest with 16.
Sophomore Parks Cawthray (Oakville, Ontario) had nine saves.
CUW also held a 36-30 advantage in ground balls. Freshman Gretchen Paaverud (Ramsey, Minn.) and Ava Karlov both finished with five.
Senior Natalie Mackrell (Florissant, Colo.) and sophomore Emily Robertson (Canton, Mich.) both had three draw controls.
The Falcons open Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play on Wednesday against Aurora.
