St. Norbert Swipes Both from Baseball

DE PERE, Wis. - The Concordia University Wisconsin baseball team suffered a pair of heartbreaking walk-off defeats on Tuesday afternoon, falling to St. Norbert College by scores of 4-3 and 1-0.

With the losses, the Falcons drop to 19-18 overall and 11-11 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play.

In game one, the Green Knights struck first with a run in the bottom of the second. CUW quickly responded as sophomore Connor Lasch (Chicago, Ill.) delivered an RBI single with the bases loaded to even the score at 1-1.

St. Norbert added two runs in the bottom of the eighth to reclaim a 3-1 advantage, but the Falcons rallied in the ninth. Freshman Graham Kasten (Mequon, Wis.) ripped an RBI double, and junior Matt Miller (Fredonia, Wis.) later drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 3-3.

However, the Green Knights had the final word, walking it off in the bottom half of the ninth to claim the 4-3 victory.

Senior Zach Slome (Schaumburg, Ill.) kept CUW in the game with a strong start, tossing seven innings with nine strikeouts and three earned runs. Offensively, senior Josh Aguiniga (Chicago, Ill.) led the Falcons with two hits, while sophomore Alex Ames (Plymouth, Wis.) drew a pair of walks. CUW stranded 12 runners on base in the loss.

Game two followed a similar script, with pitching dominating throughout. Senior Luke Bruckner (Fond du Lac, Wis.) was outstanding, tossing seven shutout innings while allowing just four hits and striking out three.

On the other side, St. Norbert's Jason Schroeder was masterful, throwing a complete 10-inning shutout without issuing a walk.

The game was ultimately decided in the bottom of the 10th, when the Green Knights loaded the bases and drew a walk-off walk to seal the 1-0 win.

Despite being held scoreless, CUW had seven different players notch a hit in the nightcap.

With postseason positioning at stake, the Falcons will conclude the regular season on Friday with a crucial road doubleheader at Concordia Chicago.
