Falcons Sink Sabres in Double Overtime

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin field hockey team handed Marian its first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon. The Falcons picked up a 1-0 double-overtime victory to improve to 4-2 and send Marian to 6-1.

Junior Maddie Rider (Danville, Pa.) had the first shot of the game for the Falcons in the first quarter.

The Falcons started t apply more pressure in the second half of the contest and had four penalty corners in the final two quarters.

Junior Parks Cawthray (Oakville, Ontario) kept the Falcons in the contest with eight saves in regulation.

The Sabres had some breakaway opportunities to open the first overtime session, but Parks Cawthray came up big and a defensive save for junior Leah Mouganis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) kept the Sabres scoreless.

The Falcons responded with opportunities late in the session with shots that were saved by freshman Kaitlin Baylen (Antioch, Ill.) and freshman Charlie Coln (St. Louis, Mo.).

Marian held the advantage to start the second overtime with some quality looks at the net and two green cards for the Falcons, but the Concordia defense stood tall.

The Falcons were able to break through in the 80th minute when Charlie Coln tipped in a shot from senior Katelyn Cardinale (Mount Laurel, N.J.) at the goal line.

Not only did the victory snap Marian's six game winning streak. It halted Marians eight-game streak against Concordia. The Falcons are now 2-0 at home on the year.

Marian held a 22-13 advantage in shots on Sunday and 7-5 margin in penalty corners.

Kaitlyn Baylen led the flock with three shots in the victory.

Parks Cawthray was perfect on Sunday with 14 saves.
