Falcons Shock No. 3 St. Norbert in a Shutout

MEQUON, Wis. – The Falcons picked up a ranked victory on Friday night over the third-ranked Green Knights of St. Norbert. The Blue and White pulled out the 1-0 victory to improve to 8-7 on the season and 5-4-0 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.

Sophomore Connor Van Weelie (Mississauga, Ontario) lit the lamp 29 seconds into the contest on Friday off assists from junior Riley Klugerman (Aurora, Ontario) and junior Alex Ochitwa (Prince George, British Columbia) and that is all it took to claim the victory.

St. Norbert held a 15-6 advantage in shots in the first period but the Falcons held the lead.

Concordia Wisconsin had some opportunities on a five-on-three power play in the second period, but it was St. Norbert with the best opportunity with a breakaway opportunity as the last penalized player was freed, but junior Blake Hazelton (Lake Orion, Mich.) iced the opportunity.

St. Norbert blitzed the Birds with everything they had in the third period, and even stacked an extra skater, but the Concordia defense stood tall and preserved the victory.

The third-ranked Green Knights held a 43-21 advantage in shots.

Blake Hazelton posted a career-best 43 saves in his first career shutout.

The defense fought hard for 60 minute and blocked 23 shots, with junior Matt Koepke (Vernon Hills, Ill.) leading the way with four.

Friday was the first shutout for the Falcons since a 4-0 victory over Marian on Nov. 19, 2022. This is the second time St. Norbert has been shutout this season, the first coming at No. 2 Aurora (0-3) on Nov. 21. The last time St. Norbert was shutout by an unranked team was a 0-1 loss at Marian on Jan. 21, 2023. Today was the first victory against the Green Knights in the Ozaukee Ice Center since 2017, that was also a 3-0 shutout. It was also the first ranked victory since the 2-1 victory at No. 4 St. Norbert on Jan. 17, 2025.

Concordia Wisconsin is now 2-1-0 against St. Norbert in the regular season over the past two years and 2-2-1 overall, SNC has been ranked in all five games.

Concordia has extended its longest winning streak of the year to three games.

The Falcons close out the weekend series at No. 3 St. Norbert on Saturday night.
