Falcons Shine Against the Stars

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin women's basketball team extended its home winning streak on Wednesday night against Dominican. The Falcons soared to a 65-45 victory over the Stars.

The Falcons jumped out to a blistering start on Wednesday night. Concordia flew out to an early 10-4 lead in the first three minutes of the game. The run ended with back-to-back three-point baskets for freshman Amya Pluess (Burlington, Wis.).

The Stars stormed back and held a 13-12 lead after the first quarter.

Dominican elevated the lead to 18-14 with 7:30 left in the second quarter. The Falcons fought back and reclaimed the lead for good at 22-21 with a layup from freshman Isabela Gunderson (Waukesha, Wis.). CUW earned a last-second defensive stop to take a 28-25 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was dominated by the Falcons on Wednesday night. The Birds soared to a 13-4 run to push the lead up to 41-31. The spree was spurred on by three-point shots from junior Gracie McNabb (Grafton, Wis.), Amya Pluess and Isabela Gunderson. The Falcons finished the third quarter holding onto a 48-41 lead.

The Concordia defense locked down Dominican in the fourth quarter and held the Stars to shoot 0 for 10 from the field. CUW pushed the lead up to 21 points on two occasions with baskets from freshman Kendall Weiler (Owen, Wis.) and senior Blayne Gacke (Crooks, S.D.).

The Falcons drained a season-best 10 three-point baskets, led by sophomore Kristin Wentling (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Gracie McNabb with three each, Wentling finished a perfect three-for-three.

Kirsten Wentling led the game with 19 points in the victory, for her career-best performance.

Amya Pluess stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Concordia scored 20 points off 16 Dominican turnovers.

The Falcons look to build on the winning streak on Saturday at Edgewood.
