Falcons Grind Out a Win at Edgewood

MADISON, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin women's basketball team earned a statement road victory on Saturday afternoon, knocking off Edgewood 55-49 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play. The win improves the Falcons to 5-12 overall and 6-5 in the NACC, while the Eagles fall to 9-8 on the season and 8-2 in conference action.

Junior Andrea Butterbrodt (Green Bay, Wis.) opened the scoring with back-to-back baskets to give Concordia an early spark. After forcing a turnover, the Falcons quickly capitalized as sophomore Alexa Schwartz (Treynor, Iowa) finished a fast-break jumper to push the lead to 9-3.

Edgewood responded and trimmed the deficit to 13-12 late in the first quarter, but Concordia closed the period on a 5-0 run over the final two minutes to take an 18-12 lead.

The second quarter proved challenging for the Falcons, as they were limited to five points. Edgewood used the momentum to take a 26-23 advantage into halftime.

Concordia came out firing in the third quarter, opening on a 5-0 run to reclaim the lead. A three-pointer from junior Gracie McNabb (Grafton, Wis.) put the Falcons ahead 28-26 just one minute into the half. CUW held the lead for much of the quarter before Edgewood tied the game twice in the closing moments. A layup from freshman Kendall Weiler (Owen, Wis.) restored a 40-38 lead, and a defensive stop allowed the Falcons to carry the two-point advantage into the fourth.

The final quarter featured a back-and-forth battle. Freshman Amya Pluess (Burlington, Wis.) extended the lead to 44-40 with a layup, but the Eagles answered to tie the game at 44. Sophomore Kristin Wentling (Arlington Heights, Ill.) then gave Concordia the lead at 46-44, and the Falcons would not trail again. CUW sealed the victory by converting three free throws in the final minute.

Freshman Isabela Gunderson (Waukesha, Wis.) led all scorers with 14 points and added three steals. Butterbrodt finished with 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

The Falcons held a 43-37 advantage on the glass, tying their season-best rebounding performance.

Concordia Wisconsin looks to continue its winning streak on Wednesday night with a road matchup at Concordia Chicago.
