Cougars Clip Falcons in Illinois

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Concordia Wisconsin women's basketball team saw its winning streak come to an end Wednesday night as Concordia Chicago defended its home court with a 68-48 victory.

The Cougars opened the game with a 9-0 run, but the Falcons settled in and battled back throughout the first quarter. A 5-0 CUW spurt capped by an old-fashioned three-point play from freshman Kendall Weiler (Owen, Wis.) tied the game at 14. Weiler struck again in the final seconds of the quarter to knot the score at 16.

Concordia Chicago pushed its advantage to 31-22 midway through the second quarter, but the Falcons responded once again. Freshman Isabela Gunderson (Waukesha, Wis.) sparked a 5-0 run to trim the deficit to four points before halftime. The Cougars carried a narrow 32-27 lead into the break.

Sophomore Kristin Wentling (Arlington Heights, Ill.) opened the third quarter with a layup to make it a one-possession game, but CUC answered with a 9-0 run to regain control at 41-29. Concordia Wisconsin continued to fight, cutting the margin to 49-42 in the final minute of the third quarter.

The Maroon and Gold sealed the win in the fourth, outscoring the Falcons 16-6 over the final 10 minutes. It was the first win for the Cougars over the Falcons on their home court since Nov. 25, 2014. CUW had won eight games in a row inside Geisman Gymnasium. CUW had won five games in a row over CUW and 13 of the last 14.

CUW was led by junior Andrea Butterbrodt (Green Bay, Wis.) and Wentling, who each scored 10 points. Despite the loss, the Falcons controlled the glass with a season-best 47 rebounds, holding a 47-32 advantage. Ten different Falcons recorded at least one rebound, with junior Jayden Ross (Baraboo, Wis.) and Butterbrodt leading the way with eight apiece. Ross also paced the team with six assists.

Concordia Wisconsin will look to bounce back Saturday when it hosts MSOE on Alumnae and Krista Mayyou Day.
