MEQUON, Wis. – It was a historic afternoon for Concordia Wisconsin men's hockey on Saturday as the Falcons brought out the brooms with an 8–1 victory over Hamline. The win completed a weekend sweep, moved CUW to 7-7-0 on the season, and featured two program records.
The Falcons struck first for the second straight night, capitalizing on the power play in the opening period. Sophomore
Levi Carter (Keremeos, British Columbia) tapped home a shot from senior
Derek Humphreys (Spokane, Wash.), with sophomore
Connor Van Weelie (Mississauga, Ontario) also registering a deflection on the play.
Hamline evened the score for the first time this weekend early in the second period, finding the back of the net just three minutes in. From there, however, it was all Falcons.
Concordia erupted for a program-record seven goals in the third period to put the game out of reach.
Freshman
Cooper Brown (Airdrie, Alberta) opened the scoring surge by burying a rebound off a shot from junior
Matt Koepke (Vernon Hills, Ill.).
Three minutes later, junior
Alex Ochitwa (Prince George, British Columbia) tipped in a feed from Van Weelie, with junior
Riley Klugerman (Aurora, Ontario) picking up the secondary assist.
Senior
Derek Humphreys joined the scoring next, slipping a backhander past the goalie with assists from freshman
Matt Green (Barrie, Ontario) and Brown.
Just one minute later, Green lit the lamp from the far circle after crisp puck movement from Van Weelie and sophomore
Jack Guvenal (Georgetown, Ontario).
At the 14:02 mark of the third, Humphreys etched his name into the record books, breaking the school record with his fourth career shorthanded goal after stripping the puck at the blue line and finishing the breakaway.
The goals continued to come as the Falcons struck again on the power play. Carter netted his second of the afternoon from the far side of the crease off a pass from freshman
Easton Penna (Coboconk, Ontario), with Ochitwa earning the secondary assist.
Guvenal capped the scoring with just over a minute remaining, sniping a shot from the slot after tic-tac-toe passes from junior
Matteo Orme-Lynch (Paris, France) and junior
Sawyer Wirsing (Arundel, Maine).
After trailing in shots entering the third period, Concordia dominated the final frame with a 17–11 advantage, finishing the contest with a 39–34 edge overall.
Junior
Blake Hazelton (Lake Orion, Mich.) turned aside 33 shots to improve to 3-3-0 on the season. Carter was strong at the dot, winning 15 of 23 faceoffs.
Saturday marked the fourth time this season the Falcons have scored multiple power-play goals, joining games against Gustavus Adolphus, Dubuque, and Concordia Moorhead. CUW now leads the NCHA with three shorthanded goals and has recorded its second weekend sweep of the year.
The Falcons return to action at home on January 16, hosting No. 3 St. Norbert inside the Ozaukee Ice Center.
