APPLETON, Wis. – The 12th-ranked Falcons extended their unbeaten streak to 18 games on Friday night at Lawrence. The Concordia Wisconsin women's hockey team improved to 18-1-1 on the season and 12-0-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association with a convincing 7-1 victory.
Junior Mackaylan McGown (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) started the scoring 18 seconds into the contest as she crashed towards the net off assists to junior Brenna-Grace Dittmer (Chatham-Kent, Ontario) and sophomore Scout Stromberg (Tomahawk, Wis.)
Scout Stromberg celebrated her birthday with a goal to start the second-period scoring from high in the zone from a pass from freshman Abby Hansberger (Elk River, Minn.) from behind net and a secondary helper to Brenna-Grace Dittmer.
The Birds struck again 28 seconds later when freshman Michael Gerum (Wausau, Wis.) found freshman Riley Veldman (Arvada, Colo.) for her first collegiate goal.
Junior Naomi Black (Ottawa, Ontario) added to the lead with a power-play goal from in front of the net off a pass from Mackaylan McGown that was fed off a rebound from a senior Makayla Spejcher (Green Bay, Wis.) shot.
Sophomore Gabby Cicirello (Mequon, Wis.) scored her first collegiate goal to open the third period after freshman Julie Barlow (Bassano, Alberta) and Makayla Spejcher fought for the puck from behind the net.
The Vikings spoiled the shutout bid halfway through the third period.
CUW quickly responded with a goal 22 seconds later when freshman Faith Fedyniak (St. Albert, Alberta) deflected in a shot from freshman Jordan McQuade (Brampton, Ontario) and a secondary assist to sophomore Taylor Helaniak (Mercer, Wis.).
Abby Hansberger scored in the closing seconds of the game off a rebound from sophomore Sydney Fergusson (Bancroft, Ontario).
The Falcons held Lawrence to four shots on Friday and sophomore Gretchen Paaverud (Ramsey, Minn.) finished with three saves.
The Birds look to bring out the brooms on Saturday against Lawrence.
