APPLETON, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin men's hockey team picked up three key points and took five of the six points on the weekend from Lawrence with a 3-2 road victory at Lawrence. The victory sends the Falcons to 9-10-1 on the year and propels CUW into fifth place in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings with 20 points at 6-7-1.
Halfway through the first period, junior Riley Klugerman (Aurora, Ontario) started the scoring with a goal in front of the net off a pass from sophomore Connor Van Weelie (Mississauga, Ontario) behind the net and a secondary assist to sophomore Levi Carter (Keremeos, British Columbia).
The Vikings leveled the game two minutes later.
Four minutes into the second period, sophomore Jack Guvenal (Georgetown, Ontario) gave the Falcons the lead on the power play once again with a shot through traffic from the point off passes from Riley Klugerman and Connor Van Weelie,
The Falcons' special teams play added to the lead eight minutes later when freshman Cooper Brown (Airdrie, Alberta) scored on a shorthanded breakaway off a pass from freshman Matt Green (Barrie, Ontario).
The Vikings cut into the lead with a goal in the third period, while skating four-on-four.
Sophomore Cameron Hrdlicka (Calgary, Alberta) came up big late for the Falcons with the Vikings having the extra attacker and a late-breakaway shot that was denied.
The Vikings held a 32-23 advantage in shots on Saturday.
Cameron Hrdlicka finished with 30 saves in the victory.
In a game that featured over two hours of penalty minutes, the Falcons did not allow a power-play goal on six opportunities.
The Falcons will hit the road for a three-game weekend in Adrian, Michigan to open February.
